Question by James L: Acne – what’s worked for you?
You see infomercials with all kinds of products, and with it people and their before/after pictures..
Those are only a handful of people though, and it is most likely scripted if not the results exaggerated.
I want to hear from the real people.
What’s worked for you?
I’m 19 years old, and far past puberty.
I’ve only tried various benzoyl peroxide solutions, and while I’m open to other “products”, I’m more amenable to natural solutions such as a specific diet and things that don’t come in a bottle.
Like.. what do you wash your face with? You always see hand-soap.. or body wash, but I never see anything called face-soap.
I’m done looking for exotic and revolutionary formulas.. I want something trustworthy… tested and proved.
The only thing that has made a noticeable difference for me were antibiotics which I had to take after a jaw-surgery. (the antibiotics weren’t meant for the acne, but it helped regardless)
However, the doctor said that antibiotics were only a temporary solution.

edit:
i’ve tried proactiv and murad, plus various drug store products and they didn’t work for me or my brother. so just went to my normal doctor (not dermatologist) and he gave me a prescription for Benzaclin. I also got some benzoyl peroxide cream wash (4.5%, i think) which I use at night, and this stuff called SFC Lotion (Soap free cleanser) which I use in the morning. The Benazclin i use at night before i go to bed, after the benzoyl peroxide wash. My face is basically cleared up now, just a few zits here and there.
But hey, not everything works for everyone, right?
I’d just go to the dermatologist if you can afford it and he/she will give you something depending on your skin type and stuff.

Im telling you man, the best way to get rid of your acnee fast
is to
- Mix salt and vinegar together in warm water, rub it gently in circular motion on your face then let it dry up and clean it off with hot water after 20 mins. Very effective trust me
accutane the best and most strongest
neutrogina clearsil facewash
i tried minocycline, but it made me breakout worse. i’m going to try accutane soon.
Roacutin worked well for myself and alot of my friends, but requires a doctor and prescription. And do stay away from alcohol when it, otherwise trippy dreams ensue
Neutergena works for me i haven’t had a pimple in months try it o and use it everyday or it wont work!
i’ve tried all that infomercial crap and for the most part it made it worse. i then just washed my face with “method” hand soap (i don’t even know if the brand matters) and my acne cleared… not totally but it did noticably
I’ve used proactive for seven years. I still get zits occasionally, but it helps. whenever I get lazy and stop using proactive (for more than a couple of days) I break out.
I’ve tried the vinegar remedy but it dries out my skin really badly.
birth control worked for me. umm but I’m guessing you’re looking for something else haha. Proactiv has worked for me too, but you have to keep up with it. I had a friend who used Proactiv then switched to a less expensive brand that has the same ingredients as proactiv and promises even better results– I’ve never tried it but I’ve seen it it’s in most grocery stores and Walmarts, and it’s in a bright orange box.
As far as diet, you have to stay away from the stuff that also makes you fat, like sugar and greasy foods. Drink lots of water and eat fresh foods. Also remember it won’t happen over night, anything you try will take at least a few weeks before you see really good results. Good luck!!
My experience has been that nothing on infomercials has works. I’ve (in my youth) tried a bunch of different cremes and ointments. What has worked for me though has been this: Drinking plenty of water a day, eating fruits and vegetables and trying to stay away from greasy food. I don’t wash my face, I just rinse it with water. Age is a huge factor. When graduated from High School my acne disappeared, which I figure had to do with stress, fitting in, meeting girls, etc.
actually there are bars ment for your face
and
acne does clear up with proactive
I would wash face with a gentle, non abrasive face wash (avoid clearasil) and then dab spots with tree tree oil.
First its very hard but don’t pick at your face. It can be like an addiction, but do not do it. Drink plenty of water and eat lots of raw hydrating fruits and veges. I use this bar soap called Purpose, my Dermotologist gave it to me so there. Don’t go for that crap on tv and dont believe the hype about exfoliation. Just be gentle to your skin and use a skin lotion that has no perfumes or oils in it. I use fragrence free sensitive skin curel’. Look at the ingrediants no mineral oil, no oils of any kind. Try adding MSM into your diet like mixing it with your water.
Cathy L. tea tree oil nice call
Both Proactive and Differin work pretty well.
There’s this Neutrogena set that supposedly works well. It’s like Proactive, but cheaper (I think). Neutrogena also has face soap that works awesome. It dries out acne and it feels like it’s tightening your face.
Also, maybe some of the foods you’re eating are making you break out. I know that that may be a rumor, but who knows, maybe there is some truth in that.
I am 27 and I STILL have it. GOD, am I seriously going to have issues with this until I start wrinkling and then it wont matter anymore because I’ll be old anyways.
Proactive – It didnt work for me. but my friend with barely never acne liked it.
Those knock off proactive brands you buy for 20 bucks at CVS – those worked just as good as proactive imho.
Dermatologist – Differen gel – I liked Differen bc it didnt seem to dry out my face as much. Retin A stuff – it works, but it dries out your face too much. Antiobotics – kind of worked but the medicine left a bad taste in my mouth. Egh.
The bad stuff with the dermatologists is that you cant go out in the sun with the bulk of the stuff (and when you do, your face turns red). You have to pay a crapload for it. (like 65 bucks for the doctor’s visit and then another 20 – 70 for prescriptions). A tan at least hides the zits a bit. But then, with the dermatologists stuff – you cant tan and then your zits dont go all the way away so you are pale and then still sorta zitty.
The best thing that helps me is washing my face with Neutrogena or Cetaphil. And then overhauling my diet. When I am at a good weight and I’m eating right – I dont get those deep under the skin zits. And most of the breakouts go away. (like, even better than with the dermatologist’s stuff). I stop drinking sodas caffeine and preservatives, etc.
(I was reading a book on eating. And they said that when your body is filled with food and its not using some portions of the food you eat, it causes problems in the body – whether it be inflammation (arthritis, zits), cancer, buildup in the arteries, etc). I now believe that the food we eat is our every day medicine. So I’ve done a major overhaul on my diet. I’m only like 2 days in though …
Umm, I wrote alot.
The only thing that worked for me is Accutane.
You may want to go to a dermatologist and ask for antibiotics. They’ve given them to me before but they only made things worse. Good that it works for you!
Acne is not related to diet. You get acne when you eat oily food because you touch your face with oily hands (you don’t notice it). You should see if you can watch a re-air of a program about this on discovery health.
Unfortunately some of us have hormones that go haywire for a long time….maybe forever.
ProActiv didn’t do anything for anybody I know.
I stopped using all that garbage and bought some Dove Sensitive for my kids, used it one day on my skin and viola!
I use Dove Sensitive at night and morning. If I feel a breakout coming (stress, cycle, etc) I use Benzyl Peroxide cream and then put Dove lotion on my face (that was told to me by my own dermatologist when I had both Benozyl Peroxide and Saclyic Acid rx’s). Drinking tons of water does help too.
The other cleanser I tried was something called African Black Soap. I got pregnant again and it dried my skin out so I threw it out, but for those 2 months it also cleared up my skin superbly well. Dove is cheaper though.
